Visit Outer Island
Every visitor that comes to Outer Island should sign our guestbook. Your support allows the Friends and the US Fish and Wildlife Service to show our leaders in Congress how important this island refuge is to the public.
When you visit Outer Island, please take the time to read some of the interpretive signs or take a guided tour with a Visitor Services Volunteer. Or just come, relax and enjoy the outdoors.
Become a Volunteer
Yearly dues for Individual Memberships are $20, Family Memberships are $30 and Student Memberships are $10. Your dues will help the Friends to maintain the island by providing funds for the general upkeep and maintenance of the island.
Once you are a Friend, you can contribute more support by volunteering. You can help with an island cleanup, assist with a school outing, or become a Visitor Services Volunteer.
Donate
Donations are always welcome. When you visit the island, there is a collection box that allows anyone to donate money to help support the island. You can also make a donation online. The Friends of Outer Island is a non-profit organization so your donation may also be tax deductable.

Purchase Smeagull the Seagull here and help support the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge
Smeagull is a wild herring gull. For more than 12 years now, he’s been knocking on Valerie and Mark’s sliding glass door when he wants to be fed. But of course Smeagull, being wild, can fend for himself. So Valerie and Mark did the one thing Smeagull couldn’t do for himself: They wrote a book about him! Smeagull the Seagull, A True Story is written in rhyme by Mark Seth Lender, and beautifully illustrated with full-color spreads by designer Valerie Elaine Pettis. Smeagull is intended for children of all ages - parents like it too.
Mark Seth Lender is a producer and the Explorer in Residence for Living on Earth, which is broadcast on 270 public radio stations, nationwide.
Valerie Elaine Pettis is an internationally known graphic designer.
